Duck-billed Platypus
Ornithorhyncus anatinus
The platypus is one of the strangest animals on the planet. It is so strange, in fact, that the person who discovered it first thought it was a prank! The platypus has combined adaptations of multiple species of animals into one. It has a sleek, otter-like body, a large, beaver-like tail, and a wide, shoebill-like beak. Add a venomous spur to its hind foot and you've got a platypus. They can grow up to two feet long, and can weigh up to five and a half pounds.
Marsupials
Marsupials are a rather peculiar group of mammals. The females barely get pregnant, and give birth so prematurely, by our standards, that it is no bigger than a jelly bean, even for the largest members.
Common Mouse Opossum
Marmosa murina
This six-inch long marsupial lives near forest streams and human settlements. It has a versatile diet, which includes fruit and small invertebrates and vertebrates. It usually rests in tree-holes, bird nests, or other spaces in trees.
